The Concordia university sponsors since last November, the project of
Ana Cappelluto, solid project in the description and the analysis of
the theater costumes of the collection of the CNC. This project aims
notably, by the way of the information highway, to make know the artistic
work of the inventors and craftsmen working in Quebec since the last
forty years.
The CNC possesses a collection important of clothes prepared for the
Québecois theater houses, clothes drawn by number of inventors.
The sum of bound articles to the feminine costume is estimated to 600
whereas the one bound to the masculine costume, is estimated to 500.
These theater costumes are part of the collection coming from the inventory
of the shop of B.J.L costumes. and he/it concerns, more particularly,
the acquirement in 1990, of the costumer of the Theater of the Green
Curtain, the Green Curtain that celebrates, otherwise this year his/her/its
fiftieth birthday, and represent, to him only, about twenty years of
work of conception of François Barbeau costumes. Besides, the
CNC carried itself purchaser in 1996, of the totality of the collection
of the Popular Theater of Quebec (TPQ) that existed, for his/her/its
part, since 1963.
The development of a data base accompanied by his/her/its diffusion
has for goal to offer a tool of research accessible to a widened clientele
and varied. For Ana Cappelluto, the ultimate goal is to succeed in seizing,
through this one, the history of the theater costume in Quebec. This
is how while doing an analysis of the data, she/it intends to identify
the influences that marked the theatrical creation since the years 1960
until this day.
For the inventors or craftsmen, this research
is of a precious contribution, since they will have access, by his/her/its
intervention, to their previous productions. Thanks to her, they will
have the possibility to participate in the selection of the costumes
that represents them the more and that, in a back-up goal and inclusion
in the section references. That making, they will be able to isolate
them in forecast of objects of documentation or pieces for future exhibitions.
This data base is a first-class reference tool, since it will understand
the information surrounding the productions and the collaborators, while
providing an exact visual representation.
The objectives of the project, gradual on three three years, are the
next one:
To develop a tool of presentation and promotion of the CNC, his/her/its
mission, his/her/its collections, his/her/its organization and his/her/its
activities, and this, by the creation of a Web site.
To create a system of information (Intranet and Internet) and a data
base to catalog methodically and to document the theater costume collection.
Every card will consist of the data on:
-the identification of the garment: short description, represented period,
sex, size, number of piè if necessary, section of ranging - Internet;
-the identification of the team of conception: inventor, attending,
dressmakers, perruquier, etc, and year of creation - Internet;
-information on the production: title of the piece, author, year of
creation, producer, theater, year of production, character, comedian,
etc. - Internet;
-information on the acquirement: date, fashion, cost - Intranet;
-the description of the garment: cloths, details of cut, feature, modifications,
remarks - Intranet;
-the visual representation of the garment: reproduction of the model
or photograph of tray, photograph of the whole costume gone up on model
of presentation, accompanied by two or three photos of confection details
in close shot - Internet.
To use the information of the data base to understand and to explain
the development and the creative contribution of the inventors of costumes
in Quebec, leading to the report of research prepared by the team of
Concordia.
Subsequently, to use the bank of information and the report of research
for:
-to identify and to select the prominent and representative pieces of
the collection and to isolate them in order to protect this theatrical
heritage;
-to search for and to provide the documentation jointly for the preparation
of an exhibition of the major works of the collection to the publication
of an exhibition catalog.
To make know the inventors and the craftsmen, while distributing a text
describing the stages important of their career as well as their main
realizations, the quite accompanied by the artist's photograph.
To provide to the students, teaching staff, craftsmen, professional
of the middle or to all other person interested by the domain of the
costume, a new tool of research on the costume, adapted to the technology
of the year 2000.
To make to know and to make more easily accessible, wealths and the
components of the collections of the CNC: first, by the diffusion of
the theater costume section (1st stage: 1100 articles) then by the addition
of the sections precious and of reference (2nd stage: 5000 articles
of 1845 to 1970), then finally, by the addition of the loan section
(3rd stage: 130 000 articles of 1534 to 1998).
To distribute on the site, for example, the information bound to research
and the diffusion of the costume, the publication of the quarterly bulletin
of the CNC, the communiqués on the exhibitions of the CNC or
the report of research of the Concordia university.
The site that contains the theater costumes of the collection of the
CNC is the result of a work of description and picking of data. As all
work of archives, he/it is part of a process in constant development.
In spite of all most conscientious efforts on behalf of the team, he/it
can lack information. It is why, this research in home one, in continual
progression, always to the look-out of new information.
